9.17.05
North Shore 16 MIT 15
This is going to be brief, as we pretty much did as little as possible to
get a win.
There was very little flow to this game, as the slightly wet conditions and
somewhat sloppy ballhandling kept it disjointed. We did enough to carve out
a a lead in the first half. One of our tries I believe was the result of Jesse
Brewer running in support of Matt Thibault and receiving an inside pass and
taking it down the sideline for a score.
Two penalties were added by Rich Depiero, and also another try which was attributed
to Scott Marcoulier, presumably running outside on a counter-attack. All that
really stands out is that at one point we had a 16-5 lead which dwindled over
the course of the game to 16-15 with an MIT try with pretty much no time left
on the clock, and the angle of the kick made it near impossible to convert.
We held onto the one point lead and sweated out the win.
Not to be overlooked were some guys stepping up, namely TBo propping and then
Kenny replacing him at #3, Neal Toomey coming in as a late-game sub and making
a huge effort to get across the field and make a tackle, and many of our forwards
and some backs holding the line and preventing any other scores.
MIT had a strong fullback who we kicked towards much too often, as well as some
crafty runners in their backline and hard-hitting forwards. This was a game
of missed opportunities for us though, with two knock-ons inside five meters
and some bad decision making. Onto next week and chalk it up as another learning
experience.
B-side: NSRFC 31 MIT 17
The B game was more wide open, with running room to be found and hard hits
and runs from Frank Chung and Luis Frances, with some veteran play mixed in
from Dan Solomon and Gus del Puerto along with Vudu Matt Richard, Rob Moran,
Jesse Brewer, Trevor Maz, Mouth Addison and Craig Hutchinson.
Scoring were Luis (first one ever - nice!), Maz, the ever crafty Solomon, Hutchinson,
and Moran on a gift from Maz...
