North Shore RFC 43 Central Maine 0
NSRFC had our second ever night game against Central Maine, who was struggling
to get a full 15 together and traveled anyways, so big thanks to them. With
a few North Shore faces in the Stripers colors, we got the game off with a decent
crowd on hand. Some familiar faces appeared like North Shore alum Marcel Philippe
and Jesse Dole fresh from hibernation and apparently ready to flank for 80 minutes.
The game started with Central Maine owning the possession for about 10 minutes
and rarely letting the ball out of their offensive half of the field. They were
stifling any offense we tried to create while moving the ball and supporting
well. We were able to keep them from scoring during the early flurry, and that
would lead to a swing in momentum towards the end of the half.
North Shore possessions started leading to breaks, which was how we got on the
board first. Matt Thibault made a great individual effort, breaking several
tackles on the way in to open the scoring. Shortly thereafter Scott Marcoulier
would make a break down the wing and add to the scoring total. Joe Sveda was
also making punishing runs and touched down for a score of his own. Trevor Maz
also found space around the end for a score towards the end of the half when
no one could cope with his pace. Andy Carnevale got a little reward for all
of his time playing hurt this season when he finished off a multi-phase possession
with a score.
In the second half, the game opened up as people probably got tired and the
speed of Trevor, Jesse Brewer and the rest of the North Shore backline started
to become a big factor. Trevor put up another try, a highlight reel run where
he burst down the left wing and was pretty much gone from the time he got the
ball. Brewer and Marcoulier would add tries to push the total to 43.
Central Maine played us very evenly in the breakdowns, set pieces and in the
middle of the field, but the explosive play on the outside saved us as it has
on so many occasions. Thibault, Ken Spinale, Jesse Dole and all of the forwards
were strong in the rucks. Mark Swan leveled someone who had just gathered a
ball and the play quickly led to a score.
Thanks to Matt Richard, Jay Shah, Ross "Lock" Arnold and new guy Matt
for stepping in for the Stripers. Thanks to all the social members, friends
and family who made the trek out to see our last game of the season.
