Referee's Official Match Report
Both sides started out strong defensively in this season-opening D2 game on a sunny September afternoon at Moakley Park. With a halftime score of 7-3, it appeared that we were on course for a low scoring game but the second half delivered open, running rugby as energy levels sagged and defensive lines tired.
Old Gold started out with a nicely worked try, duly converted for a 7-0 lead. With North Shore on a determined attack, it appeared that they might level the score, only to be penalized five meters out from the line for entering a ruck off their feet (thereby sealing the ball and preventing a fair contest). North Shore did however get 3 points on the board shortly thereafter with a penalty kick sailing neatly between the uprights.
The second half saw a far more open game, with six tries - four to the home side and two to North Shore. Most were the result of running backs facing rapidly tiring defenders, who left holes aplenty in the defensive lines. Old Gold were the first to score in the second half and had built up a comfortable lead by the time North Shore reacted and started their comeback. It was too little too late however and Old Gold held on to win by a respectable margin.
