A sunny, windy day at Manning Field in Lynn greeted the men from the North Shore. With the Exiles showing up with limited reserves it was decided that the game would be played in 3 periods of 30 mins.
From the first whistle North Shore played with the intent that was spoken, prior to kick off. The men in red played smart rugby by utilizing the windy conditions to their advantage. Hartigan and co plugged the corners with kicks forcing the Exiles into errors. From the errors the forwards were able to pick and drive into a position close to the try line. From all the pressure that the forwards were putting on the Exiles defence Cam Short picked the ball from the base of ruck, saw some space down the weak side and dove between defenders to get the first try of the match. Sullivan stepped up to take his first shot at goal and pushed the ball wide, virtually the only kick that he missed all day.
From the ensuing kickoff the forwards set the platform after claiming the ball. A few piggie plays saw some thundering runs by shields, manning and co. The ball was then turned over a number of times before the play broke wide to the reds with a flying Sullivan showing the ball and going slicing through the defence to claim the next try. The Exiles were the next to score with some unfortunate errors happening from the back of ruck and the Exiles forwards jumping on the ball to score.
The rest of the first third was dominated by the men in red. With the forward pack leading with a dominate scrum and a strong driving maul from the line outs which couldn't be matched by the Exiles.
The second third saw some changes to the lineup and with the score in the reds favor, the game plan started to fall away. The Exiles took advantage of some of the sloppy play and put on a few tries before the reds finally snapped out of at and returned serve.
In the final third the reds superior fitness showed through which culminated in some great inter play which was capped off with a great try set up by Chad Horn who throw a great inside ball to Ox who ran a great support line to score between the sticks. Jason Potash also scrambled through for his first try for North Shore which also meant that he got to meet "the boot" latter in the afternoon.
All reds tries were scored by Cam x 2, Ox, CJ, Sully, Hartigan, Mahoney and Potash.
Jake Shields came away with the forwards MOTM. In his first start in the A side Jake brought great physicality to the contact zone. Jake has only ever played in a handful of rugby games and has taken to the game like a duck to water. Well played.
Sully came away with the backs MOTM. Sully played at his usual high standard. He was thrown into flyhalf after yours truly came off with a head knock and filled in seamlessly. Showed great running lines and his kicking at goal was on song.
