Our Match Report

This past Saturday, North Shore RFC took the field against Freedom Rugby Club for the first match of the spring 2018 season. Held at The Manning Bowl in Lynn, MA, the Red's arrived with strong numbers - 32 players on the roster! and even some supporters in the stands, despite the cold weather. The game format was (3) 30-minute periods, allowing both teams to experiment with different line-ups, and get everyone some playing time. Both teams came out fired up to start off the spring season.

The first half featured the anticipated starting line-ups from both teams, and it was all North Shore. Though the game started out with some sloppy rugby (lots of knock-on's and penalties), the reds were able to maintain composure, and pin Freedom in their half, maintaining the majority of the possession. The defensive line speed and tackling by both backs and forwards looked sharp, forcing consistent errors by Freedom. While the offense was able to dot down (3) tries, one of which was a highlight real grubber kick by sully retrieved by Tommy Macrae, who offloaded to Ben, who offloaded to Arif for a score. Tim also put on a kicking clinic, converting 100% of his kicks in the period.

1st Period Score: NS-21 - Freedom-0

For the second period, the coaches took advantage of our depth, and made some strategic adjustments to the starting line-up. Freedom seemed to wake up in the second, finding their rhythm, and forcing North Shore to make some tough defensive goal line stands. Unfortunately, Freedom did find some weakness in the defensive structure, and they were able to find the try line twice in the second period. However, North Shore did continue put points on the board with two tries of their own in the second. One coming off of a great run by Ben Comeau, and the other which was a textbook passing play getting the ball out wide to Tommy Macrae for the score.

2nd Period Score: NS-35 - Freedom-14

The third period, provided several opportunities for players to get some reps in at unfamiliar positions, as well as new players getting some real game experience. This included the intimidating backline combination of Tom Moore at flyhalf, Karim at inside center, and everyone's favorite hung daddy Nick Messier at scrumhalf. The third half definitely proved that we have some talented depth, and some new potential starters in the line-up. Other than that there were no notable chip and chase try scoring plays that I can remember.

Final Score: NS-47 - Freedom-19

Men of the Match (Who also won the boat race)
1. Ben "The Slippery Eal" Comeau
2. Dan "Brocky Jr." Paige
3. Mike "Honey Nut" Wilson

All in all, it was a great match to knock off some of the dust, prepare for playoffs, and identify strengths/weaknesses.
