NSRFC 12 Rutland 3

September 27, 2003

After a lengthy bus trip to Rutland, VT, North Shore was able to overcome their own penalties and the wind on an otherwise beautiful day.

The final score was 12-3 but that included two missed kicks by Rutland and some constant pressure in the second half.

Poor handling and a variety of penalties kept NSRFC from scoring any more than two tries, and limited the open field attacking.

Trevor Maz scored the first try of the day on a break down the left sideline that also involved Tony B and Dan Donato. (Conversion by Rich Depiero)

The Rutland fly half made a habit of kicking early and often, with the wind pushing the ball in every direction. Despite the wind, kicking never turned out to be a game-breaker for either team.

In the late first half, Martin Mahoney beat his opposite number to the outside from the center position and went in for a score. That made the score 12-0, and the conversion failed.

In the second half, a huge number of penalties, injuries, and scuffles kept the game at a choppy pace.  Rutland spent a good amount of time threatening but could never get through the North Shore line of defense.  Three penalty kicks at goal resulted in only three points to leave the final 12-3.

Captain Chris LeBlanc made some monster hits as usual while Tony B dominated the lineouts, and Jesse B came in late to throw a big hit and stifle a counter-attack. All in all a messy game but a win nonetheless.

The bus ride home was a good time as expected, and thanks to Rutland for the hosting.
